Usually, you are either replacing a previous system with a new one, or
introducing a new system that will need to work with existing manual and
automated procedures. In either case, customer personnel must learn to
operate what you’re turning over to them. You should consider all the
usual means of training: formal classroom sessions, seminars, on-the job
training, and computer-assisted instruction. Some training will be
unique to your project; other forms may be available through your
company’s regular education program.
You will need to write and deliver user manuals for use both in
training and in future operation of the system, and here is an
opportunity to shine. Many good software systems are delivered with poor
user guides. Bad writing reflects adversely on your whole system. Often
the user information is the only tangible part of your product for the
customer, who’ll judge you by the kind of writing job you do, so take
pains to do it well.
